Antiques and Heirlooms

There is something exceptionally romantic about antique, or vintage, rings - especially if they are family heirlooms. Connecting with family, or a specific era, as well as each other bequeaths a bond that cannot be matched by something that has never been worn. Some do not care for them. Others hold them in awe.

Look for these priceless treasures in antiques stores, estate sales, or at auctions. Most rings will fall into three artistic eras; Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco. Keep in mind that they may not be appropriate for everyday wear. They may be too fragile, or incredibly ornate. Also remember that the industry standards for yesterday's gemstones were quite different. Diamonds, for example, were highly prized for their color and fire, which resulted from less exacting cutting methods. Today they are prized for their whiteness or clarity.

Victorian rings

Often set in yellow or a unique rose gold, these rings were created from 1835 to around 1900. This was considered the 'age of romance', and engagement rings were true works of art. The designs ranged in complexity, and were formed more from the stones themselves than the metalwork. Diamonds and pearls were favored, sometimes in multiple rows. Some rings were quite large and heavy.

Edwardian rings

Engagement rings from 1900 to 1920 were typically white gold or platinum, known for their superb craftmanship, delicate filigree and attention to detail. Lace-like bows, scrolls, hearts, flowers and exquisite beaded edging were common. Gems were often single rose-cut diamonds or sapphires.

Art Deco rings

The Roaring Twenties produced a more geometric look with sharper edges and bolder colors. Often a bold center stone was surrounded by smaller stones, fashioned together in patterns of flowers, leaves, and other shapes. Contrasting stones and colors were common as were the classic Asscher, Emerald, and Marquise cuts. Another favored style was a white diamond set in platinum, creating a white-on-white effect.
